Executed in gouache and white chalk over black chalk on vellum, the work combines botanical observation with the emerging tradition of still-life imagery. Hoffmann carefully rendered a peony, irises, an amaryllis, and two beetles, emphasizing both the scientific accuracy and individual beauty of each specimen. The work is considered one of the earliest examples of still-life painting and reflects Hoffmann’s strong connection to the naturalistic tradition of Albrecht Dürer. It is now part of the J. Paul Getty Museum’s collection.
