About The Art

The Adoration of the Shepherds (1646) depicts the biblical moment when shepherds gather to worship the newborn Christ. The scene is characteristic of the dramatic use of light and shadow associated with Rembrandt and his workshop, with an intense glow surrounding the Christ Child emerging from an otherwise dark and humble interior. The composition belongs to a group of related Adoration scenes produced within Rembrandt’s circle during the 1640s. Although the painting bears Rembrandt’s signature and date, modern technical and stylistic examination has led the National Gallery in London to attribute its version to a talented pupil working in Rembrandt’s studio. The work nevertheless offers a revealing glimpse into the collaborative nature of 17th-century Dutch painting and the ways Rembrandt’s distinctive treatment of light, biblical subjects, and intimate human emotion was developed by artists around him.
