The Infant Jesus and the Shepherds by William Henry Margetson depicts the Nativity, with the infant Christ surrounded by shepherds who have come to worship him. Margetson was a British painter and illustrator known for romantic, idealized figures and religious and literary subjects. His work combines Academic Realism with the decorative influence of late Victorian and Edwardian art, using graceful figures, rich color, and a sentimental atmosphere. Margetson also created biblical illustrations for Nelson’s Bible Wall Pictures, where this subject was reproduced as The Nativity.
