About The Art
George Henry Durrie’s Winter-Time on the Farm, painted circa 1862–63, exemplifies the idealized rural winter landscapes for which the American artist became known. Durrie was largely self-taught and worked in and around New Haven, Connecticut, beginning with portraiture before turning increasingly toward scenes of rural life. His winter paintings often combined carefully observed details of farm life with an idyllic, orderly vision of the New England countryside. Durrie’s snowy landscapes became especially influential when they were reproduced as lithographs by Currier & Ives, bringing his vision of rural America to a much wider audience. Painted near the end of his life, Winter-Time on the Farm reflects his mature interest in transforming familiar agricultural life into picturesque seasonal scenes.
