About The Art

Le Compotier de Pêches (Bowl of Peaches) (c. 1889–90) by Édouard Vuillard is a small, intimate still life depicting a bowl of peaches with a focus on color, pattern, and the quiet beauty of an everyday domestic subject. Painted early in Vuillard’s career, the work reflects his developing Post-Impressionist style and the influence of the Nabis, the avant-garde group he joined shortly after this period. Rather than emphasizing realistic detail, Vuillard used simplified forms and expressive color to create a decorative, atmospheric composition. The oil-on-canvas work measures just 6⅝ by 8⅞ inches and was sold at auction in 2016.
